Margaret has been in goats for most of her life, and has worked extensively with other ruminants. She can provide grazing consultations for those working to grow their own farms; assistance and troubleshooting with livestock (specifically goat/sheep) health, management, and nutrition; and hands-on services like hoof trimming, disbudding, and some emergency care.
Margaret can do all the things listed, and also is willing to help teach many of them.
Margaret has the supplies to draw blood for disease and pregnancy testing and can assist with getting samples labelled and shipped properly. Travel fees may apply.
Price per head for standard trims; extreme cases may incur extra fees. Travel fees may be additional.
Disbudding of young goat kids (generally 5-7 days of age). Strong preference for animals being brought to us.
Tattooing ears or tails. Ears are easiest when done on young animals during disbudding. Travel fees may apply.
It's hard to find veterinarians who regularly see livestock, especially small ruminants. Margaret is not a vet but has handled plenty of situations on her farm, and is willing to help others as much as possible. One-off calls, texts, or emails are welcome. Frequent, long-term, or long-duration consults may result in fees (which will be communicated before they start accumulating).
Margaret will come out to your farm to help deal with an animal that cannot be moved, for which no easy diagnosis has been confirmed, or in case of emergency. Fees will apply.
Margaret serves as the Livestock Viability Manager for Practical Farmers of Iowa, and as the Affiliate Network Support Staff for Goats On The Go. Through these roles, she offers grazing consultations and targeted grazing Q&A calls - all free.
These free consultations are for established or aspiring livestock farmers interested in taking their management to the next level – whether that’s grazing for the first time, going from monthly to weekly moves or setting up a super-intensive system with multiple paddock shifts a day. Margaret’s specialty is ruminants, but she will also facilitate calls (or find an expert) for monogastrics and poultry.
